| As of today, I discover that Penguin Publishing won a case against SABIS for plagarising their materials. SABIS/Choueifat had to pay a substantial fine to Penguin. Good, one blow to that disgusting, vile organization. Mr G your days are numbered. |

Since Wikipedia can be edited I don't think we can use it as a reliable source...even you said in one of your posts that SABIS has people editing it, didn't you? Do you have an actual news article? I looked online but couldn't find anything. |

| Do people teach for places like this. If the TEFL community would stop allowing themselves to be treated like slave labor then maybe the systems like Choueifat would change. The one real hope that that nothing last forever and this system to will change or fail. All institution or businesses alike must adapt to survive |

Carol, I don't mean to insult you, but have you lived and worked in the Middle East for an any extended period of time? Choueifat is a business, as you mentioned on the other forum, but so are MOST schools in the region. So few are not-for-profit. Choueifat spins a good bit of propoganda, and has done so for many, many years now. They offer an image to many parents in the region that is appealing. Is it real? Well, the tests are real, and the parents like it. It's bragging rights. I know I wouln't send my kids there, but lots of parents like what they see.
Personally, most of the people I knew in Choueifat were not even ESOL teachers. They were either people looking for a working holiday, or qualified teachers who wanted to do a few years abroad(and hadn't done their homework). I don't think Choueifat is going anywhere. Within the UAE, at least, they have an incredibly powerful sponsor overseeing their 5 schools. |

Actually things are going the opposite way and things are getting worse, especially in the Gulf. Wages are stagnant, benefits have been lowered, class sizes are larger, and the teacher qualifications are being lowered at the same time at many places - meaning many more unprofessional teachers and managers.
We ARE slave labor to them and the only option we have if we don't like it is to not go there and teach. Qualified professionals need to check out their employers very carefully... and even then things can change rapidly and what had been a good employer for a number of years seems to self-destruct as MLI did, and now PI seems to be having mysterious problems.

So is this person being brided or have some other vested interested in allowing Choueifat to continue its abusive ways? No matter what is occuring the or the reason behnd it, I still stand by systems and businesses must adapt or fail. |

Carol, I'm going to have to assume you have never worked in the UAE, or perhaps even been to any of the Arabian Gulf nations. Sponsor=Emirati. In this case, it's a sheikh. There is no need to bribe him. How much money the school makes (provided that he does not feel it's publicly inappropriate or shameful) is his best interest. Systems and businesses may change over time if international attention is drawn to it (refer to the discontinuation of child jockeys in the UAE for an example), but I highly doubt teachers will find anyone taking up their cause anytime soon. To be honest, though Choueifat often treats their teachers like crap, there are better jobs to be had for the qualified teachers. Anyone stuck in the system ought to finish out the year (or do a runner if it's that bad), and then get on with it-get the right education, or if you already have it, move on to a better employer and chalk it up to a learning experience. Choueifat will always find another person to fill your shoes, as there will always be a bright-eyed college grad seeking a working holiday. |
