Is it worth the hassle to bring a bicycle to Istanbul?

Any advice on things to pack that I can't get easily? Athletic shoes? I'm thinking about foodstuffs (North American), books, etc.

Also any ideas on small gifts from USA to give to Turkish hosts?

Thanks in advance!

Mo

A bike? Are you suicidal? I would most definitely not ride a bike here. It is dangerous enough as a pedestrian (I have been nudged more than once by ımpatient drivers...).

No for the bike. Bring as many Converse running shoes as you can because apparently they can be sold for 100 YTL.

Oh, while I think of it, bring toothpaste. I was just in Levent, which I know is expensive anyway, and was going to buy some Colgate but was surprised to see it priced around 7.45 YTL. And I saw no Listerine at all. Tampex are also apparently hard to come by.

If you want to bring your bike, and are somewhat fearless, do so. I think it would be great to take it to a place like Bykada (small island near Istanbul with no cars). If you are going to ride anywhere else in Istanbul, grow eyes in the back of your head!

Thanks Sandy and Hobo. 7.5ytl for Colgate! Yikes.

Shortbread will be a nice gift. What about the younger kids?

Now I am afraid to bring the bike. I was thinking about using it outside the city. Are bikes allowed on the ferries?

About the Converse shoes. Are you talking about the classic Chuck's? Hi-top or low? They sure aren't the most comfortable of shoes.

What is the availability of Mexican-style foods? Any restaurants?

I have a bike, and l used to ride to and from work everyday. You just have to be very careful is all.

There is what l think is a great Mexican place in Ortaky called Picante.

http://www.istanbullife.org/restaurant/picante_restaurant.htm

I'm not really sure if l know what good Mexican food is, but it is the best that l have had in Istanbul. However, avoid the Cajun chicken as it is way too salty.

You can buy a tube of toothpaste for a couple of lira, so l wouldn't worry too much about that. If you must use Tampax (providing that you are female), then you will have to bring them with you.

I wouldn't bother worrying about the price of toothpaste ... unless, that is, you're talking about a paste to stick your teeth back in with ...

classic stuff. Unfortunately, my flatmates and I were still living out the 'Young Ones' lifestyle in the 90s. As was almost all the teacher population of Bakirkoy at the time.

Not the magic mushrooms - the magic raki. Everything is good after three glasses.
