I started my new class at the company on Monday, but I had to go through heavy security and then walk through the monstrous factory which makes engines for big trucks as fork lifts careened through the behemoth of modern industry. Then my new students turned out to be four male Potosino industrial engineers who had gotten used to having a "pretty young bilingual Mexican woman" English teacher. This was all after taking a half hour bus ride through the hot, smelly and unregulated Zona Industrial as dark skinned obreros (workers) stared at the well dressed "guero" (white man), who was crazy (and obviously poor) enough to ride a bouncing mexican city bus through the summer heat.

Actually, my students at Cummins are very nice and one even gave me ride home yesterday, so I'd like to retract any negative comments that I may have made about Potosinos. Also, I'm suprised that no one has called me a racist for mentioning skin color in my previous post!

YOU RACIST!

Just kidding. I don't think you've pointed out anything the rest of us haven't noticed about Mexico.

Why would we call you a racist for describing the realities of the Mexican transportation (CLASS) system?
Guero, usually, but not always,=money.
Money usually = car.

Darker skin often = working class.
Working class usually = bus.

Now, if you had said, "How dare that company hire a darkskinned manager, what will their clients think!" That would be a different stroy. Wink

I like a nice cold bottle of Leon, which can sometimes be found on offer at $35 pesos for a six pack in HEB - probably the best supermarket in SLP.

Welcome to Mexico!

Seriously, things that you actually need to survive are cheaper in Mexico. Rent, groceries, public transit, eating basic meals out, utilities, to name the ones I can think of off hand. Strangely tobacco(?), and hard liquor are cheaper than in the US. Beer costs about the same.

Most other things are either on a par with the US or more expensive. Electronics, clothes, shoes, cars, computers, appliances, telephone service(both land line and cell), and other "luxuries".

If you can bring things like a laptop or a PC, and any other smaller electronics with you, I advise you to do so. A Play Station 2 sells new for about 2-300 USD. Most electronics are at least 25% more expensive than in the States.

Yeah, the cheap beer (always in bottles) is way better than the canned crapola that you get in the US.

But watch out for the Potosinas - they're MUY CARO (and I say that from personal experience!)

hey guys what are the power outlets in SLP? Are they the same as in the U.S and Canada? All of my cables are 3 way plug-in...is that what they use there? I hope so...I don't want to buy any transformers just for a couple of things... Also, how is it down there? I will be arriving on Saturday, i am extremely excited!

anybody want to hook up for a beer next week sometime? I will be alone for a week until my room mate arrives! I'd love to speak to other English speaking teachers...to give advice on teaching and the city...

Let me know!

No matter what you use to plug in your laptop in Mexico make sure you have a good surge protector. The current here is always fluctating wildly, and then there is the lightening...
