What would you consider the best cities to live and work in for an aspiring artist/electronic musician to moonlight?

I'd like to avoid pollution and find beautiful scenery but realize that urban China is probably not likely to offer all these things.

Thanks for any input.

For beautiful scenery you should check out some of the touristy cities like Guilin, Yangshuo, or Lijiang. I would assume there would be a demand for electronic musicians, I'm not sure about the details though since I have never lived in these cities. Most of these cities look just like average Chinese cities, but have beautiful scenery near by.

Moonlight as anaspiring electronic musician??? As in getting paid something? The you need to go to the big cities (Beijing/SHanghai), and you'll probably get paid a lot less then if you were teaching and even then, it won't be easy. Not many live bands in China

Aspiring artist? As in willing to starve for the cause?

Seriously thinking about it, not many jobs offered,,, but Kunming. Freshest air of any .. well not big city, but big to us laowai. Lakes rivers and mountains. Not that many teaching jobs

A place like Beijing probably has more like-minded souls ... stereotyping you of course

Of course, a lot depends on what you want for scenery

smaller cities (though still pretty large, and definitely not pollution-free) to check out might include chengdu and xiamen. the former definitely has an active, thriving arts/music scene both for foreigners and locals. quite a few of my friends here make their livings in full or in part as musicians. possibly wuhan, though that's allegedly more "punk" than electronic music. guangzhou seems like it might have some stuff going on too, but that's going back to the bigger cities.
