Actually it will be the afternoon and the call to prayer rather than the bells, but anyway...

So, I managed to get the paperwork, even braved the 7.30am ferry from bursa 2 dys running to go to the Govenor's office (Zafer Bayram, how stupid am I) and we have been squeezed in for tomorrow afternoon for the signing bit.

I'm British and would like to register my 'nuptuals' in the UK - is there a time limit in which to do this? Also I seem to remember I have to register my change in status with the Police - I have a floaty feeling (too much vodka) that it needs to be within 15 days - is this correct? Also will they sting me for more money to update my Ikamet?

Happily to report they didn't charge for the medical exam and I guess if I had some nasty lung disease they'd have told me.

Never having done this myself I can only hazard a guess....

Have your banns been published in your local UK consulate? That seems to be the first step for officialdom here. After that, they (the officials) should talk you through the procedure.

Thanks FGT for replying - it may be a bit of a no man's land as I'm not sure how many people have gone through this process (how romantic) here.

Yes, banns have been posted at British Consulate for 3 weeks and have got paperwork from BC and got it stamped by Turkish Authorities in İstanbul. They haven't given me any guideance regarding what I need to do afterwards. All paperwork seems good for tomorrow- we took it yesterday to one of the marriage offices that marries foreigners (we got turned away from the nice one as they only do Turkish weddings). and we'e getting married in a shopping centre which to be honest is as close to a Mosque or Church as we'll ever get.

A long time ago I did this in Bulgaria. I remember 'posting the banns' at Her Britannic Majesty's place in Sofia. 'Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage' depended on that. Our two daughters who are the fruits of this union got both Bulgarian and British birth certificates, but I do not recall any marriage certificate issued by HMG.

You don't have to register the marriage back in the UK, as you will get an International Marriage Licence.
Congratulations! My wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary back in June.

Congratulations!

You can't actually register your marriage in the UK although you can register it with the consulate if you choose (for a fee). I didn't bother but I did change my name in the UK and got passport, driving licence etc in my Turkish married name. The marriage document is international and therefore accepted everywhere (although one dozy girl at my building society was a bit suspicious of it).

The answer is it depends. I was late and the kind policeman at Ordu remembered me and charged me nothing at all by way of a fine or fee for the update. I think it is a question of how officious the official is!

thank you everyone for the advice! As it was, we were over in England last week so only got it sorted yesterday which was our 17th day of getting married. the policewoman said it didn't matter and there was no charge. My husband had to get a paper from the local Nufus office stating that we had got married and when, and the we took a photocopy of our red book together with a ridiculous declaration typed on once of those very old typewriters at the Dilek�e place (so quaint it's not computerised) and then the police dealt with us very swiftly.

so cheers and rest assured any others getting married in the future - it only took an hour and a bit which is pretty good for Turkey or anywhere really.

That stupid dilek�e thing! It's like something left over from the Ottomans no one's thought to get rid of. What's the point having a special piece of paper telling them what you want, when you can just as well walk up and tell them what you want? Or just hand them the form you need to fill out anyway?
