What should a typical and acceptable freelance contract look like for one of the big three schools? What sort of information should I look for in it, to make sure I have no nasty surprises ahead of me? |

If you are freelance it usually means you work when they offer work if the time and location suits you and for an agreed rate per academic hour, but does not guarantee that you will get a fixed number of hours per week etc. unless they have a regular client or group for an a contracted period.I have worked this way myself and it gives you flexibility to plan your own schedule. You can make good money this way but it takes time and patience to get organised. Also beware that especially in a place like Russia, things can change without warning and lessons may be cancelled by clients for one reason or another etc etc. so I would also clarify whether you will get paid under such circumstances.Equally if you are forced to cancel, what are the penalties? How often will you get paid and on which day of the month or week etc? Will it be in roubles or can you also get euros or dollars?Never presume anything!
On the other hand if you sign a contract with any of the big three, you will be forced to work when and where they want you to in exchange for a very low fixed salary and dubious benefits such as some kind of shared accom. or maybe flights and visa invitation fees etc.So obviously I would choose the freelance option anyday! |

I am unhappy with something I've read in a contract. I am trying to figure out if it is justified. It may be wiser just to pick up private clients! |

Without knowing exactly what you mean or the name of the school its difficult for me to advise you whether you should take it or not.If you would prefer to contact me direct I don't mind at all.I'm presuming you are already in Russia and have made your own arrangements for visas etc.I would also bear in mind that relying solely on income from private lessons could be unreliable, unless you already have enough students and funds to tie you over. |

If you feel something is not o.k. then it usually isn't,especially in a place like Russia-never assume anything to avoid nasty surprises! |
