Hello all, my name is Daniel and I'm planning to go down to Costa Rica for about a week this fall on a "scouting" trip to check out the country and see if it's a place I would want to try to work and also ask around and do some footwork down there to see what opportunities might be available (teaching at a language school, doing private lessons, or maybe even something in a different industry, like business or real estate if possible). I am bi-lingual in Spanish and have heard lots of good things about Costa Rica, which is why it's my top destination over other hot spots such as Thailand, etc....

I want to make the trip productive and worthwhile, so I would greatly appreciate some advice on these topics: First of all, I don't think I'll spend the whole time in only San Jose. What other cities do you think I should go to to investigate. Do certain parts of the country have greater opportunities / demand then others. What do you think would be a good itinerary?

Also, in San Jose and any other cities you would recommend, I bet there's certain cafe's / bars where the expats hang out, and I'm sure they would be a great source of info as they're already there doing what I want to do. What specific places can you recommend as being good to meet expats easily and get some info? That way, I can make sure to visit those places while I'm in that city and it'll make my trip more productive than just doing things randomly.

Hey, thanks a ton, I look forward to your advice!!!!

Getting work outside the greater San Jose area is difficult/very difficult, but it's possible, especially if you are truly bi-lingual, which allows you, theoretically, to work in a bunch of private schools around the country. Sorry I can't be more specific.

The News Cafe in downtown San Jose would be a good place to start. Dave's ESL Cafe. Any place in Escazu if you want rich Americans complaining about the horrors of downtown San Jose. Your most obvious source of information, however, is the schools themselves - go and talk to the people who work there.

Thanks Ole. I've been researching Costa Rica now and it looks like nearly all the people live right in the San Jose area. However, when I go down there for a week, to cover my basis, I may travel outside the central area. It seems to me that the Guanacaste area would be the best to go to in terms of possible jobs. Do you think this is accurate, and if so, which cities in that region would be best to visit? Or are there other areas of the country that might be better to go to instead? Thank you!

I'd say Guanacaste too, because it's the most populous area of Costa Rica outside the Central Valley, but it's just an educated guess. I don't really know anything specific, sorry.
