Hello, I am a ESL teacher moving to Budapest on November 4th. I have a one way ticket and am wondering if anyone knows if the boarder guards will allow a one way ticket tourist into Hungary with just a valid Passport. I do not have a job yet so I cannot apply for a work visa. I will leave within the 90 days to either get a visa or to find a job elsewhere. Any advice would be great thanks. |

Turkey?
Chris, you'll enter Hungary as a tourist. So long as you don't need a visa to visit the country (you don't say where you're from) it's highly unlikely any questions will be asked.
Don't volunteer any information unless you ARE asked. But the answer "I'm going to look for work as an English teacher" is NOT going to get you into trouble.
The fact that you come on a one-way ticket is not a major red flag. You could easily be planning to travel by train later on around Europe, or whatever.
Don't worry - you shouldn't stand out from the crowd in any way, given what you've said here. |

Chris - you shouldn't have a problem. I flew from Warsaw to Budapest on a one-way ticket back in May, and wasn't sweated at all when I hit Hungarian customs at Ferighy. FYI - I'm a person of color, could pass for Arabic... and didn't have any problems.
I'm heading back to Budapest again next month on a one-way connection.
I think the one-way ticket is more of a red flag in North America, maybe even more so now with the war and Iran conjecture. |

You do not mention your nationality. Are we supposed to assume that you are a Gringo ? A South African might have problems. Ditto a Nigerian. |

You probably won't have any problems - the great majority of visitors come to budapest with just a budget airline ticket, which are all singles. And I've been over the border on the bus with no return ticket perfectly fine. All depends on your passport I suppose. I assume you have EU from the 90 days thing? If you do, you'll be fine. |
