I've been teaching here for more than 2 years now. I started out with the TEFL class and gave private lessons, tried an institute and then moved to universities and back to privates. There's tons of work here and the pay is above average for the economy.

Beginning $20.000 an hour.
After about 6 months I changed to $35.000 an hour.
I do have friends with more years of experience here pulling in $50.000 an hour.

You can make more but I live nicely for $35.000, I take less when I teach in a university (I teach in 2 different ones for $25.000) because I get nice blocks of hours and I don't waste time traveling around the city.

Minimum monthly wage here is around $450.000 which you might see quoted in some ads. Thats good if you live in a very poor neighborhood. You can live comfortably for around $1.500.000 if you're single and don't travel or party too much. I make about $2.500.000 a month and it's a really good life style with plenty of money to save up for vacations. I would shoot for earning $2.000.000 if you come here.

No native speaker should accept anything less than $20.000 an hour here if they have a degree, any degree!

Expect your early students to only be 5 or 10 minutes late, you'll get used to it. Its just part of the culture.

If you are considering coming here, DO IT! It's the most wonderful country on Earth, don't believe the news stories or the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie image of Colombia. Its a modern country filled with great people. I feel safer walking here than in the states.
