HI
Whats the go when it comes to renting rooms?
Is there a contract to be signed and / or minimum rental period? What are the basic rights of renters and is there a government agency that helps to enforce these? Anything to be aware of in particular? |

The rental period is usually 12 months, if you leave before then and there's no-one suitable to replace you then you risk losing your deposit.
Deposits are usually one or two months rent. If they ask for an "aval bancario" then they want to take an option on 6 months to a year's rent in case you do a bunk/squat, so usually new teachers can't do this.
The best idea is to come, stay in a nice social central hostal, make some friends and look around for jobs and rooms. Trying to get a place from abroad is very difficult and a bit pointless as you don't know where you'll be working and what areas you'll like. Renting a room in a shared flat is probably the best idea for your first year.
Good websites are www.loquo.com and www.idealista.com
Try to look for something before the end of September as the Erasmus students swoop down and take all the nicer rooms for the University term. |

I thought I would add a new dimension to this posting...
Boys beware - its a girls world when it comes to renting here in Spain!
Most adds (at least here) explicitly ask for a female (preferably sutdying and young) Girls prefer to share with girls and guys want to share with girls so go figure! |
