Don't know if this will be deemed "worthy" of becoming a sticky, but anyway...

PPP - Present, Practice, Produce - A tried and tested style of teaching commonly promoted on the CELTA, as it is easy and relatively risk-free.

TTT (1) - Test, Teach, Test - Another way of looking at teaching, where you test what the students already know, teach them what they don't, then test it again.

TTT (2) - Teacher Talk Time. Very Bad Indeed, at least on a CELTA.

STT - Student Talk Time. Much better than TTT(2), there should be more of this than TTT. Well, on the CELTA, at least.

TBL - Task Based Learning. Where the students do a "task" (such as planning a round the world trip) in which there is no specific linguistic objective. Language focus comes before or after the task, but not during it.

ELT - English Language Teaching. (The general concept of it), easier to use because pedants sometimes get their knickers in a twist about...

(T)ESL - (Teaching) English as a Second Language. Teaching in a native English speaking country (like US, UK) and

(T)EFL - (Teaching) English as a Foreign Language. Teaching in a non-native country (like China).

DOS(1) - Director of Studies. The boss, but not usually owner, of a school.

to doss(2) - To be idle (British verb)

AC - Academic Coordinator. Like a DOS, but for...

EF - English First, the largest chain of ELT schools in the world - and can be infamously 'diverse' in terms of quality.

ADOS - Assistant Director of Studies. Someone who does a lot more work than a teacher for a pitifully greater salary.

IH - International House. A well respected yet geeky ELT organisation worldwide. Employs incredibly ugly CELTA and DELTA trainers.

BC - British Council. See above

CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English(?) - A very hard English course/examination.

CAE - Certificate of Advanced English(?) - A hard English course/examination

FCE - First Certificate of English - A hard(ish) English course/examination

IELTS - ?. An exam to be taken before non-native speakers can be accepted into British universities, widely considered to be better than

TOEFL - ?. An absolute monster of a test, which is used for entrance in US universities.

PRC - People's Republic of China - a large asian country

IELTS = International English Language Testing System. Also used for immigration to English language speaking countries as it has both a general and an academic strand. DEFINITELY better than.....

TOEFL = Test of English as a foreign language. A language exam that doesn't have a speaking component!!! Very (American) culturally biased.
Believed not to be accepted in Australia.
