Hello,

I am totally confused on this issue.

One company told me that i absolutely need a BA degree in order to obtain a Z visa in Shizun. This person also said I musst go to Hong King to obtain the 30 day Z visa.

Another told me that she can arrange a Z visa from within China and that I do not need to go to Hong Kong. She also told me that she can arrange a Z visa even though i do not have a BA degreee. She said it depends on the company's relationship with the local PSB.

Any comments please.

Thanks

The official law may state that a degree is required. However in China the rules vary depending on the place and like you said the school's relationship with the local authorities. The best advice if you don't have a degree is to go with the second company. They must have some good contacts with higher up people. If you have a college diploma or some other post secondary school qualifications, try to use them. Usually the people who check your qualifications have no clue on what they are looking at.

Other note, it's not the PSB who want to see the degree it's the Foreign Affairs Bureau. They want to see it before issuing any work permit. The work permit is needed to get the Z visa at a Chinese Embassy/Consulate.

The last part about is it possible to change a tourist visa to Z visa once you are in China. It is possible, but all depends on the place, nobody can tell you the exact answer.

A 30-day Z visa? Sounds a bit strange to say the least. If the other company says they can really get you an in-country Z without a degree, that's some pretty good guanxi.

A Z visa is valid for 30 days once the visa holder enters China. During the 30 days the visa holder must apply for a Resident Permit for Foreigners, as the Z visa expires after 30 days.

Please view my recent post "Shakedown coming to Private Chinese Schools"

How far this will go, I don't know but they seem to be checking original degree copies, and visa status of the FT's while doing these inspections.

The Private Bilingual schools seem to be the ones being inspected right now. (These are the places that hire the most FT's)

Be sure that you meet all the legal requirements for the job to save yourself a possible hassle.
