6 mos now working at the same job, no real qualms. I get critiqued everyday too, even filmed now and then(Yes, I know I complained about this, but it's blown over.) But one guy on here had said something about this newfound job being ". . .your dream job. . .wait after three mos. . ." indicating my lapse at HESS was self-imposed, that all schools are the same. Well, what now?
I think this proves this guy, along with 'that regime', to be quite deficient in thinking and in the ESL community as a whole. It proves the probation period at HESS is all superficial, that their judgment is askew, their training and teaching methods a fiasco; and that 'NO', the loss of that job wasn't a matter of it not "being the right one for either of us" but, in my opinion, a matter of subterfuge and senselessness on their part that inflicts damage on a person earnest enough to dole out $1,700.00 US bucks to trust a school that paints a false picture and facade of teaching ESL in general.
That being said, 6mos at my present job proves what I'd known and which I want to make clear to HESS: I do have the aptitude to teach, as do others, and what you do and had done proves something is wrong with your school, not us. |

nah...no questions really, but when i do have them, i have a network of people who i have met here, who have been in Taiwan longer than me who i look to for advice...i always felt the purpose of this board was to help those who are not in Taiwan, who are looking for advice related to the job field, or advice to what its like living in Taiwan...
maybe you're right, maybe the board is dead, but thats fine, i'll still keep checking in to see if there is someone out there who needs help...I know that when i did have questions to ask, there were people willing to help me out, and answer my questions in a friendly and informative manner...and not just deliver some diatribe about how one school is so much worse than the rest...
if all that makes me sound arrogant, then so be it, but i can assure you that i am anything but...
humbly yours

The sad part is Wally, that you keep on looking at this board, then picking people apart. Not like I'm not used to it, or "Here we go again." It just makes me, and apparently others, wonder who you are, if you have anything else to say other than defend a supposed "diatribe"?
Come on Wally, take a trip, see if there's any imagination behind the block.
My comment? What does it really say, to your pride, to your "newbie" mentality? Are you all there, Wally? Have you been around the block? Do you know 'Snake Allley's' bloood? Taste it, Wally, enough to conceive? Or perceive?
Then you like to use this "I've been around. . .old-news mentality" to smokescreen something's seriously wrong when people have hopes of coming here dashed by a mediocre school making its advertisement of teaching ESL a McDonald-nization mindset.
HESS blows. |

I don't think Wally picks people apart. Most people on forums don't talk to each other like they do in normal face to face conversations. The tone, particularly if its mostly males, tends to be slightly more agressive in nature. Anyway, Stayingpower, you do go on a bit which I think is what Wally meant.
I'm sure you don't spontaneously recite poetry when in the pub with your fellow teachers. I doubt if Clark breaks into a 30 minute speech everytime someone asks a question about teaching English (unlike here where his posts vary between 4 and 6 feet long).
A forum is like a living organism, if it isn't fed it dies. Its unfortunate that not many people are posting at the moment, but it has gone up and down over the years, its just a lull. But, it will only pick up if those that post regularly continue to do so, even if its somewhat off topic.
When I go to a new forum the first thing I look at is how many people have posted in the precdeing weeks. If there are only two or three posts I would generally move onto to another forum.
So what am I saying? Keep posting, even if its utter garbage, because it helps keep the place alive until a new batch of newbies come along. |

Don't be too sure about that Mark. I am known to go on and on about some topics. It does drive some people crazy, but I just like things to be clear!!
BigWally is a valuable member of this forum. Not long ago he was asking lots of questions, now he is answering them. So many newbies come to the forum, pick us all clean with the same old questions and then disappear. BigWally is giving back to the forum and that is great to see.
Contrast that with StayingPower. He goes on and on about the same old thing. The school fired him, he doesn't like that, but personally I think that he needs to get over it. Everyone knows that Hess is not perfect but they are also a legitimate employer that does right by their employees. If an individual chooses not to work there (or gets fired by them) then it is his or her right to stay clear of Hess but it is not a legitimate reason for attempting to drag them down. And it is boring to read! |

| Well, seeing as Mr. Kalgushki set the record straight I want to abide by his and this forums terms. I see a flaw, however, in the mood, or spirit of posting here(not this forum,) making all complainers, or those speaking up about their problems here, a sort of Johnny-come-lately-lay-it-on 'em mentality. |

| So what's your dream job then? Poet? I'm making plans for a return to teaching, but as a certified teacher this time in a proper international school and probably not in Taiwan, but who knows? I have a two year old daughter to consider now too. |

The "Dream Job" comment was taken after a post from one of the people from HESS, whereby they'd said something to me to mask their deficiences, disparaging my break away from them.
Most there seem to me to be 'blue-collar', taking a sort of aggressive stance towards education, really painting a pretty picture.
But you say you're "certified?" Shouldn't you know, then, that semester's all ready started? You're going to tow your daughter along? Will you not end up with a dream job thrown at you, have enough money to give her the proper medical treatment, seeing she'll be without supervision, a sound diet and health check for two months? |

I realise my comment wasn't connected with Hess, but hey, the title is dream job. Hess sucks for most people, but not for others. Most people don't walk away carrying the bitterness that you do. If you go through the Hess posts over a period of years, you'll find the overall opinion is, that it is a bit crap. That was the impression I got when I was looking at Hess in 2001 and continues to be so now. Glad I didn't end up working for them.
I worked for Nova in Japan and hated it. Others had been there 10 years. I guess we all tolerate things differently.
My wife and I are in the midst of a two year plan to get qualified and get back teaching overseas. Most international schools pay double ESL salaries, include free good quality accomodation, free flights and free private schooling for our daughter.
I believe the starting salary (including housing allowance) at Taipei American school is NT$140,000. |

I didn't mean to disparage you. I don't know about being "qualified" except that I'd worked at an elementary school before and most that 'were' qualified there had half the pay you'd mentioned.
I hope it works out for you though. Just remember that your daughter's health may not be that good for the first few months and you might need medical insurance to cover a lot of stomach ailments, if not to but cover a lot of the flu. |
