Hello ESL teachers in Vietnam,

Ive been teaching in Mexico on and off for the past 15 months. Im fed up with the lack of respect and/or low wages that Ive experienced. Im ready to make the big leap over to Asia. I've never been there and only speak English and rather poor Spanish. However, I have a BA and a TEFL
certificate. Does anyone on this forum, like their job, living situation, etc. in Vietnam? Thanks in advance for your responses!

It's time to improve your credential or change career.

In Vietnam, you will be respected by the locals more but I doubt pay will improve much.

If you're in it for teaching enjoyment and leisure, I would say Vietnam is much better.

But if you're into money, you just need to put in extra effort to improve yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Are you suggesting that I take a CELTA course in order to earn more money teaching ESL?

TEFL and CELTA are pretty much same shiat.

To really improve your credentials for better pay and more respect, you should consider graduate school degrees (Masters and/or Ph.D).
And I'm not talking about fake degrees made in Thailand either. Razz

And with extra effort you can easily pick up privates and corporate teaching jobs which pays more than average wages in a language mills.

Not having worked in Mexico myself, I have to rely upon what I've been told by others, but it's my understanding that the pay in Vietnam (based on your qualifications) will go much further. It may translate to the same hourly wage, but the cost of living is so much less that it's really quite easy to save money whilst living in Vietnam (whereas hear the same IS NOT true of Mexico). And one doesn't have to live frugally to save some serious money here either -- we eat out regularly at Western-style restaurants, have a beautiful apartment, etc. and we save quite a bit of money each month.

As for the jobs, etc., it's hard to say w/o knowing what sort of situation you're currently in and what sort of gig you're seeking....

I spent six months working in Vietnam this year and absolutely loved it. As long as you are willing to stretch yourself a little and go with the flow of the people, you will be fine. I would have stayed forever if it weren't for my kids really wanting to return for a visit to the States. We'll be back though... it was great. There is a lot of respect for teachers, pay is good and it allowed me to work less hours and still provide for my kids. Ultimate importance when you're doing it alone. Smile

Best of luck!
