I am ending my present contract in early spring of 2008. I will have 2.5 years experience in Korea. I'd like to take some time off and see my folks back home then maybe get a CELTA certificate in Thailand or a TEFL somewhere else... I dunno where yet.
What sort of work would I be able to find in Taiwan? Would a CELTA or TEFL be assets? Which of the two would be better? I think I'll probably want to live in Taipei. Is it possible to moonlight without getting deported ala Korean style.
Finally, what about jobs outside of the TEFL realm? My degree is in Graphic Design and I am an electronic musician hobbyist, could I do either of these things on the side and still not get deported?
I know that Taiwan is probably comparable to Korea as far as cleanliness of the streets and air pollution, I can cope with that.
Hmmm....
Thanks for any input. |

No!!! Taiwan has much more pollution and dirt compared with Korea - trust me.
In Taiwan, everyone rides a scooter, with scooter ownership contributing to a horrendous pollution problem.
Korea, on the other hand, is not a scooter country - the only people who use scooters are the pizza delivery and food service guys.
I have lived in both countries. In Taiwan you have to wear a mask when you ride a scooter or bicycle. In Korea that is not necessary. The levels of pollution are much lower in Korea.
Taiwan is a dump, compared with Korea - I would advise you to re-consider going there.

It's quite possible that if you come from North America, Australia or the UK, that all of these countries are going to seem more polluted to you.
I'm from Los Angeles and I can tell you that there's more pollution in Tokyo than in LA.
No matter where you're going in Asia, there's bound to be pollution.
So at the end of the day, does it really matter? lol |

Well, you will have to work harder to make the same amount of money that you are making in Korea.
I think the people are more friendly here and there is more diversity in Taipei than Seoul in my opinion. In Taipei you are not limited to hanging out with Taiwanese and English teachers. |
