|
|
Hi, I'm one of those annoying noobs who could do with the benefit of someone older and wisers' advice. I currently have two strong job offers with very different conditions. One is in a university in Hefei teaching 20hrs a week classes average 50 with no curriculum to speak of at 4800 with lots of holidays (I've posted about this before). Another is with "English First" Now I'm not that new that I haven't heard about them. The conditions are as follows Maximum 39hrs per week, teaching smaller classes sometimes VIP one on one sometimes children for 5500 then 6000 with around 20 days holiday for the year. Both include accommodation but i have to pay my own bills with EF. What do we think? Cheers Calum |

Only you know what you want
These jobs are not comparable. Only you know what interests or turns you off. Teaching, I would never work 40 hours a week, no matter the salary.
The difference in salary is NOTHING. Think about it in terms of U.S. Dollars. No, it's not really $, but would you work double the hours back home for an extra $100 or $200 ?? Sure, 1000 or 2000 RMB can buy quite a bit, but it's not worth the effort.
Children -v- college "adults"
etc
etc
etc
Only you know what you want. Only I know what I'd accept.
Simply decide, nobody can help you on this.

| Have you contacted any of the teachers at those places or looked into them at all? I'd do that first, then assuming they're both still options and you'd be willing to work at either ask yourself what's more important to you, the extra money or the extra time? Could you see yourself preferring the big classes or the small classes? Unless one school stands out as being obviously the better choice I think it would be up to you to go with your instincts but I'd be leaning heavily toward the university job as I consider 6000 per month to be way too low for 39 hours a week. |

.
Now those are wise words. Truth to be told, I fall in that category.
Hefei, I believe is near Yellow Mountain, very nice place
Financially, per month the uni is the much better choice. In Zhengzhou I would say 100 exta per hour for teaching normal language classes on the side. So do the math. Working 10 hourse on the side would give you an extra 4,000 roughly per month... and you decide whether to work the extra hours.
Unis have stable classes, you can easily swing it into teaching the same students for a year. EF ... some students one week, new students the next week etc. Often little back up dealing with students
50 students per class is the downside. i would say I have found teaching 40 students oral english at a uni to be easier, more worthwhile then teaching 20 at a language mill. By easier, I mean the uni will have a structure inplace, class leader, english department. At the language mill I am never asked to give tests, or show improvement in English. Thus the students have unreal expectations. But for some, this kind of job is preferable.Minimal leeson prep (who knows who the students will be day to day) qyuite possibly no outside of classroom work. If you are a true stage performer (ie dancing monkey) this could be your gig
Uni's usually offer good accomodation, and better support outside the classroom, usually. As someone said, ask to talk to the teachers who work there now. At my school, I like it, but the apartments suck, so the school pays me to rent my own.
And remember, this is China, bargain, bargain, bargain. Do all foreign teachers and bargain for fewer hours, try 16, at a slightly lower wage, 4,500. Much better deal.
If all that fails, get a haircut and get a real job |

i was wondering if EF offers DVD player, computer, etc. This stuff would be important to me. Clarify... computer in your apartment, not one use can use in the office.
PS I wpould be interested in which uni in Hefei. They do have more then one? |
