I was just wondering if it was necessary for me to have the medical check done in Taiwan or could I have it done here in Australia On of my doctors is actually Chinese so I guess he could write the report in Chinese if that is the only issue. I was told that the check is quite expensive in Taiwan, is that right?? I think if I had it done here in Australia it would be quite cheap. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Frankie |

It would have to be at a TECO approved hospital if done in Australia. The cost is only around $1500NT to have it doen in Taiwan and it takes like 7 working days. It's pretty easy and always tell them you live in the major city to avoid the stool sample. I have better things to do than to fish shit out of a squat toilet.

Why do you avoid the stool sample if you live in a city??. I will be living in Taichung so I guess that won't be a problem anyway. Thanks Okami. I think 1,500NT sounds ok but someone told me before it was more like 5,000NT so I am not sure who to believe. |

Do you know anybody in Taizhong? They would better be able to give you the info. Medical is cheap in Taiwan, but you get what you pay for. I can go see a doctor and get medication for a mere $33US/$1000NT total. In the US this would be at least $200US/$7000NT.
I'll ask bassman at Forumosa.com and get back to you for verification.
Cheers,

Just got this from Bassman, so here is what he wrote me:

Ah, it's been a while.
In Taichung there are different charges for male and female. I have only been taking females for checks of late. There are also different charges depending on the length of time you have been in Taiwan.
Feng Yuan city hospital is by far the quickest and they will post it out to you, sometimes in less than a week.
A quick guestimate is about $1200 - 1500NT. As an employer this is the only thing that I don't pay for. Every other charge I pay so I am clear about the cost.
Taichung (Taizhong) Long Zhong hospital is not bad either but can be difficult to find your way around and therefore can take a loooooooong time.
Feng Yuan, I can get in and out in less than an hour.
Tell him to be prepared with 2-3 photos (passport size), Passport, An address (written in Chinese) to send the med check to, A Taiwanese person to act as a contact if anything should go wrong.
A common problem is failing the drug test through no fault of your own, then you will need to pay another $1500 NT to show that you are not a stoner.
Make sure, if you are a man, that the Dr. places a check in the box that says that your genitals are normal. If the form suggests that he did not check then Taichung (Taizhong) immigration will not process your application and will tell you to go back to the hospital to get your bits and pieces checked. It doesn't matter if they check or not, they just say they did. For females there is no need to check at all. NO FAIR!
Take no cold medication before the test. |
Hope this hopes,

Thanks Okami for your help. My Taiwanese girlfriend lives in Taichung but she isn't much help because she told me she has no idea about the medical check and how much it would cost. I am not coming to Taiwan until January so I still have plenty of time to organise this. Thanks again, Frankie |
