No smoking, in the pubs???????
I can't imagine a pint without a ciggy. How's it going?
Is this the end for the great British pub?

There were a couple of non-smoking pubs in Cambridge, where I used to work. OK, they didn't smell of ciggies, but they certainly made you appreciate how effective tobacco smoke is at covering the smells of stale beer, boiled veg, BO and urine...
Then again, unpleasant though they are, these smells have never been, to my knowledge, associated with the same health problems as tobacco smoke. |

Just got back from a few days in England and saw (smelt?) the smoking ban for myself. Actually, it's great, and I say this as a non-pontificating ex-smoker who used to actually enjoy a bit of a passive smoke at the weekend. Now that all pubs are the same, you don't get the horrible smell of piety that the old non-smoking pubs used to have, where every other conversation in the place went along the lines of "aren't we good?" |

the ban on cancer...err, I mean smoking, hasn't hurt Irish pubs - in fact it created a new industry which develops "smoking areas" for those of you who are addicted to tobacco products. Perhaps the "british" pubs will fare as well...
your concern should be the price of drink!

That's why so many people buy booze from the supermarket and get plastered at home before going out, and just use the pub to stay topped up. |

As a Brit ex-pat smoker - 6 years in Mexico - I can't believe you are all (the smokers) taking this unconstitutional, infringement-of-human-right, Blairite ban so calmly. Come to Mexico - the pollution is so bad in Mexico City that you probably wouldn't even notice the smoke. |

I'd have to say the same about Australia. Since 2003 there's been the gradual phasing out of smoking in pubs. Most laws about the matter were put into practice from '06, though. In many states it's not only pubs, but restaurants, clubs... basically any enclosed public space. From what I've gathered it hasn't been too much of an issue. Course I don't routinely visit all the pubs in every state, so by no means am I claiming this is the case for everywhere... I'm talking generally on a national level.
Still, while there was the expected debate/lively discussion on the matter, it's been pretty well accepted. Outside smoking areas, designated 'smokers rooms' in some places, etc, seem to make it tolerable. |
