Merhaba from Turkey,
I am working in Ankara at the moment, but have just been offered a job in Dubrovnik. Sounds good but I am just wondering if there is anyone out there who has lived in the area, living and working there who could give me some tips?
- how much would I need to live on if the apt is already included>?
- how is Dubrovnik?
I have only been up in the northern area of Croatia, so I am not familiar with Dubrovnik.
ANy comments would be appreciated.

Hi!
I would say that you would need around 3000 Kuna per month to live on (buy groceries, go out for coffee and dinner etc), if the apartment is included. Plus of course, extra for saving and going on excursions etc.
Dubrovnik is beautiful and is the Southernmost city in Croatia I believe (or close to it). It has a small population.
Hope you enjoy it,

I haven't taught in Dubrovnik, but I did live a few months a bit further north and have just got back from a visit to the city.
One thing that I personally would find a drawback to living/working in Dubrovnik or the area around is travel connections. The airport's fine for longer trips, and there are always ferries, but road travel is just not worth it. I think I'd begin to feel isolated pretty soon. For me, Dubrovnik would likely be one great year (though cold and damp in winter and early spring, I think) and then I'd be restless.
That said, it's a beautiful area, and city, and the people are genuine (for better or worse). I suppose that the tourist hordes completely disappear in winter as well, and I think it would be fantastic to have the city to onesself to explore.
I'd go for it, personally. Assuming that the money's enough to support your lifestyle. |
