I wonder if anyone knows whether or not you have to fulfill your apt lease in order to get your deposit back or if a landlord will sometimes give it back to you beforehand?
I've been in the same apt for over 9mos, will be vamoosing on out of Taipei for good(sick of it, really sick of it, really, really, sick of it) so am going to split.
Aside from this, I wonder, just wonder, if a landlord would give you your deposit back if you do break the contract and whether or not this is the law for them to do 'depending on the circumstances?
My Thanks fellas, and it's been a slice. But from now on, SP is OP'd out.

In my experience with Taiwanese landlords, it has often been a struggle to get back rental deposits. Landlords here can be money grubbing sobs, to say the least. Even if you've resided in a place for much longer than the initial lease term, they'll often find some reason to try to withhold all or part of a deposit. Hard bargaining is often necessary. YMMV.
In your case, you have not completed the lease term. You may ask nicely if they can see fit to return the deposit, but you're not in a position to demand it back. Seeing that you made it a good way to the end of the contract, you may have a chance at getting some of the money back. However, expect deductions and don't be too surprised if you get nothing.
As an aside, I've found it better to get places unfurnished as opposed to those filled with the landlord's furniture. The more things of theirs in your place, the more likely it is that you'll lose deposit money. The concept of normal wear and tear on such items just doesn't exist. Taiwanese will even tell you not to rent such places for this reason. Better to start out with an empty place and fill it over time with hand me downs, cheap local furniture and trips to Ikea. |

I even hesitate to ask, since I had that feeling about landlords too, TS. But we'll see.
As for the dogs, MH, they're coming with me, of course. I have an outside cage for them, so it doesn't matter too much.
But the furniture at this apt is all mine. Only the bed is the landlord's, and maybe an old wooden table.
So I'm off anyways. I'm really tired of Taipei's work environment, these buxi-bans, hoping to find something more honest-in a professional sense- not in a pretending or pretentious way.
You know how it is to feel a kid again being scolded and told to do something inane or over-demanding by an overly-strict and senile grandmother just because that's the way things were done when she was young? That's the way I feel at some of these buxi-bans. I'm too fed-up with this.
Not that the grass is greener on the other side. But Taipei is full of bull-poop when it comes to the job market. |

I had to leave a place (apartment) once prior to the end of the contract but managed to get a full deposit back. How? I never contradicted what the landlord said, i managed to get someone else to replace me and literally move in the day after i planned to leave, and i spruced up the apartment by painting a dirty wall here and there. Worked wonders when the landlord came round.
Oh, and my deposit was 3 months rent, which if i remember right was NT$57,000, and I got every single cent back. |

I had two apartments, one I left after four months, one after two years-ish. Got the deposit back on both, however the school helped with the first one. I think they promised to send their incoming teacher to see the apartment |

I've broken a lot of leases over the years, and always got my deposit back. I always made sure the apartment was in better shape than it was when I moved in. I would then plan on moving out in two months, invite the landlord over to check the place out, and ask to just use up my deposit instead of paying rent. They never refused the offer. |

I agree with Forest that lining up someone to take over the lease when you move out can work in your favor. Check with the landlord first though as you don't want to go to that trouble if they are not going to give the money back anyway. |
