I was sitting in a bus to Fujian province sometime ago when a Chinese, just back from Canada, approached me to discuss teaching in his so-called "Oriental COllege" in Xiamen.
I do not know if he has any prejudices though I did not sign on. I can give you his email address if you like.
However, a training centre like this is not the best way to get a foot there. You had better get started at some college for job stability reasons!
Xiamen is a nice place but it tneds to be a little loose just like SHenzhen and Hainan a few years ago! Loose and sleazy!

Hi roger,
yes, I would like to get his email . well I have no other choice but to try to get a footing in a training ctr and anyway, my wife is from xiamen and my in-laws have a home there too... Smile so I do not have to stay at the centre's apartment but in my own home...and can save a bundle of money.
I will definitely give a go at it once I receive his email from you...Thanks in advance.... Smile

Agreed, and I understand your frustration. But these schools are all businesses, and like any other business they try to give the customers what they want. And native speakers seem to be what the customers want.

My God, I'm defending school owners again. Maybe I need to go lie down for a while. Twisted Evil

JZ65,

I'm sure you're a swell guy, but....

I agree with MT's prognosis: students want native-speaker teachers, and I can't really blame them; I would, too, in their position.

I mean, surely JZ, there must be another job you can perform in, where you don't have to butcher the language.

After all, what else can we poor down-and-out, HK wannabees expect to do, for godsake?

Anyway, JZ, keep studying (esp. idioms, verb-subj agreement and preps.). I'm sure you could teach sth, but why English? How about Cantonese?

Well, I am not a native speaker. However, students accepted me just fine. Depends on the teacher, too. I was one of the most popular teachers. There were about 25 foreign teachers. I was the only non-native speaker. I am in America now, but I will be going back to China as soon as I finish my M.A.T.

Good one. I've seen non-natives in action, I recall one teacher from Singapore who was superb with the students. It's not so much the color of the face but the teaching skills that matter most. I've found that for beginner to elementary levels the non-natives excel whereas natives do very well in the more intermediate and advanced classes.
