Hey it's official, I've finally bought a ticket and will be in Costa Rica to check it out October 20-28! Gonna stay at Hostel Bekuo in San Jose, but will probably spend a couple days in Puntarenas and/or Guanacaste provinces to see what those are like. If it looks good, I'll try to come back to get work, but this is just a scouting trip.
Hey, anyone else going down there around the same time? If so, stay at Hostel Bekuo and we can meet up. Hostels are usually great places to meet people, but it'd be cool to get to know someone ahead of time.
I've heard October is the worst for rain, but does this include the central valley where San Jose is, or just the rest of the country? Any recommendations on what to bring (besides an umbrella)? Are there a lot of mosquitos in the city itself, or just the countryside? Thanks; look forward to the replys. |

Very few mosquitoes here, in San Jose. Screw the umbrella, bring rain gear and extra pairs of shoes. :)
Good luck! |

Rain gear! That plastic stuff worn by people from Northerly climes? You've got to kidding! Sure, it keeps off the rain, but meanwhile you swelter inside like a bag of pipa put in the microwave. Who would want to do that anyway?
Costa Rica is an "umbrella culture." Take a small collapsible umbrella with you everywhere you go in CR. Yes, during an "aguacero, " you will get wet from the knees down anyway. So at least make sure you have a good pair of boots for the rain. |

Aw, John, you're just no fun. I was planning on camping outside Hostel Bueko with a camera and take pictures of the gringo in rain gear and sell them to newspapers so the Ticos (and I) could laugh at him.
Oh well. So, yeah, you don't need rain gear. An umbrella is your best friend, and decent boots. |
