I visited the elusive Benjamin Franklin Library yesterday. It`s at the edge of Zona Rosa at 31 Liverpool which is between Dinmarca and Berlin.

Do not go by the old Lonely Planet Mexico City guidebook as they have moved to the backside of that block and are now opposite the US Commerce Center. They have also changed their hours and close at 7:00 not 7:30 as listed in the LP.

They have an excellent selection of political and social issue magazines as well as US history and political science themes. Their VHS and DVD selection does not include feature films, only documentary material and a very wide selection at that. Their novels are mostly excellent selections but is hardly contemporary. they are well represented with Willa Cather, John Barth and Washington Irving, with Steinbeck somewhat less represented. They are short on the crowdpleasers, Ludlum, michener, Robbins, etc.

you need a membership card to check books out and don`t forget to bring your passport or state`s driving license as the place is amply fortified.

It's an ok library. I used to make it down there once a week as a nice respite and a chance to catch up on reading. As you said, it's kind of out of the way, but it's well worth looking for.
