|
Hello,
Is 4500-5000 a good salary in Sichuan - near Chengdu. It appears to be the norm or is it just the norm for newbees like me?
- public middle school
- single accom, internet, etc
- visas paid
- holidays - 20 days I think
- overtime
- 20 hours
Thanks,

I'm a few hours east of Chengdu and I know several people here who are making about that much. They're teaching about 16-17, 40-minute classes a week. And they're not newbies---all are experienced teachers and some have been here a few years.
I'm doing 27 classes a week and so, with overtime, am making a few thousand more. |

Thank you. I was reading some posts which conatined unfavourable remarks about salaries under rbm5000.
Are you and your friends at public institutions?

Quite a few posters have said that Chengdu's cost of living is rather low. There is no reason why someone is unable to save at least $300 USD on a 4500 RMB salary every month. It all depends on how you plan to live and whether you have any financial obligations back home. Dining out at fancy restaurants and/or partying at bars frequently, or being a compulsive shopper would see even 10,000 RMB a month disappearing rather quickly.
If you are thinking about saving some money to bring home, then don't consider teaching ESL in China as some free vacation with pay. |

You will find this salary very close to Beijing salaries. Of course Beijing is much more expensive than Chengdu. Beijing University salaries are running at the level of 5000-6500 Rmb a month for 20 hours. The typical rate is 5200-5600 and possibly 6500 if you can market yourself well.
Beijing is also becoming the most expensive city in China due to the upcoming Olympics.
Qualifications really do not matter much in the pay level. Better qualifications can get you the job over other applicants as the pay differences are only a few hundred RMB a month extra.
(This topic well-discussed here on other threads)
So the position offered to you sounds very fair, and I feel ChengDu is one of the top places to teach in China.
Good luck to you. |

I spent 2 years teaching in Chengdu. the first was at a language school, the second I went freelance.
I enjoyed living In Chengdu more than anywhere else in China... Although to be honest the only other city I lived in was Hangzhou.
You can save money and have a blast. I can say this without any doubt. Me and my buddy would buy a bottle of JD and 12 Carlsbergs for the grand total of 320 RMB stay up until 6AM in the Discos and get totally Fu@ed. At the end of the night wed be given free beer tickets valid for the following evening.
If booze isn't your thing, there's plenty of other stuff to give you thrills and belly aches
When you come out, you're surrounded by inexpensive food, mainly bbq or noodles.
I can honestly say that those were 2 of the best years of my short inexperienced life. 4500 should be just fine. But go freelance and you can earn a hell of a lot more. I spent 2 years teaching in Chengdu. The first was at a language school, the second I went freelance.

Probably not the best idea to freelance if you are a complete newbie. Freelance after spending a year or two in the city. |

Yes that's true. Spend a year learning the ropes and making contacts to set yourself up for the 2nd year.
I just realised that I repeated myself in my original post! |

i'm starting my third year here. not teaching english at the moment but did just do a job search. i'd say that salary is about normal--once you've been here a few years and if you have some qualifications you'll be able to make a bit more. |
