Can anyone tell me more about the EF English First Swara Group Tropical Indonesia? They mailed my hubby asking if he would be interested in applying for posts in Jakarta (city) & Bogor (suburb) for January 2008.
Is it a good company to work for? What are the salaries like? We have never lived overseas (we are South Africans), what are the living conditions. |

The "Tropical" bit is new to me, but the Swara group is what gives EF its appalling reputation. There have been many threads devoted to their machinations. Be warned.
Also, I believe that South Africans are not classed as 'native speakers' by the Indonesian government and thus cannot get work permits as English teachers. Some (dodgy) schools will classify Saffers as "expert consultants" or some such circumlocution and put them to work teaching anyway. Also be warned: if immigration catch you at this, you may well be deported. |

Don't be entirely disheartened by what you read.
There are a helluva lot of negative writings, mine included. but all-in-all, it's an experience!
You won't save a thing, but think what a holiday to Indonesia would cost you otherwise!
I have come across South Africans teaching, and a Kenyan guy and even some Dutch. I can't imagine why Immigration exclude SA's, unless they haven't updated their earlier laws going back to aparthied. |

In a word "ignorance", rather than any noble anti-apartheid ideals. in the same way that all Irish people are not native speakers because they speak Irish, South Africans are not either because they speak.... er... African?
Incidentally, many Indonesians seem to believe that all South Africans are black, and some of my white SA friends have been laughed at when they say they are from there!
By the way, simple anti-foreigner sentiment may be another factor, as manifested in this week's pathetic protests over the beating by Malaysian police of an Indonesian karate referee (who perhaps should have paid more attention to the techniques of the contestants he was overseeing ) |

I always laugh at the way EF talks up Indonesia as a beautiful, tropical country making people believe they will bask in the sun under palm trees with a jungle juice when in reality they will be choking on bajaj fumes in overcrowded concrete jungles.
Reminds me of an old aussie movie where Harry Secombe was looking at the London drizzle and dreaming of Bondi Beach only to end up back of Bourke getting eaten by mosquitos and living in the desert. |

A mozzie's gotta feed!!
Anyway, I wonder if you were thinking of Peter Ustinov, and not Sir Cumference??
As for Ton's original comments, I wonder if it would be worth while speaking to someone at the SA Embassy, and trying to elicit if the SA teaching ban really is still in place?
I know I read a while back that South Africa was in fact one of the 'allowed' countries.
Give it a go mate! |

I just noticed this:
If you have the idea that Bogor will be some leafy getaway, you will be disappointed. There's a nice botanical garden, but other than that it's more a hideously congested satellite town than a suburb. You'd be bettetr off in Jakarta. |

It's great. Especially for people who cannot manage to do a simple forum search.

Better off in Jakarta than Bogor?!?! You're kidding right? I would have to be paid a huge amount of money to slum it in Jakarta.
In Bogor you are close enough to have all the conveniences of Jakarta without actually having to live there. |

You didn't? Plenty of people make large amounts of money in ESL as well as in EFL.*
The backpackers and TEFLers and CELTites probably don't. But the professionals definitely do -- even in China.
* Note to non-English gibson: Teaching English at an EF franchise in Indonesia is not ESL. |

^ this is the reason teacher's salaries are so low. If doing a professional job makes you a Nazi, then Heil Hitler. |
