I am looking for any advice from people that have experienced living and working in both Japan and Vietnam. I am in Japan, but...after a time I am becoming disillusioned with it.

Hence I am looking for a plan B.

I have a few years TEFL experience,a degree and a TESOL cert....so...

(1) Could I get a job in Vietnam that would at least allow me to save some money. Obviously in Japan this is not hard..but how about in Vietnam?

(2) How do the people, particularly students, compare? My experience of Japanese people is usually of bored kids forced to learn against their own interest and generally hiding of peoples' true feelings towards you.

(3) What are the very long term prospects? Are University positions in existsence, asssuming I could obtain an MA or similar eventually.

(4) Whats the housing like? How does it compare to the small Japanese apartments?

(5) Do employers generally respect you or are you just a western product that is used to get more customers?

(6) Is it 'peaceful'..or can you find quiet places. Tokyo never sleeps...I do.

(7) How is the feeling of living and working there different? Most teachers I met in Japan are tired , as are most Japanese people.

(Cool Is age respected or is being over 35 discriminated against,as it is here in Japan?

Many thanks for taking the time to post anything useful Smile

I think it's pretty easy to save at least $500 a month here if you are working full time. There are university positions here and I don't think you always need to graduate degree to work at one. The housing here is probably quite a bit cheaper than Japan. You can rent a house here for $400 a month. You're probably a lot less likely to be discriminated against because of age. There are a lot of older teachers here.
