Hi,

As the header indicates, I am a non-native English speaker from Malaysia (The country south to Thailand). Anyone has any idea what are my chances of getting an English teaching job in Costa Rica?
I did my BA in Finance and I am currently pursuing a UK law degree (in my third year).
Would a TESL/TEFL certificate help?
Most of the links I have checked out refers to english teaching positions for native English speakers.
i would appreciate any help on how I could got this sorted out.

thanks a million

just read your inquiry, i have been to cr several times, last trip 2 weeks ago. as far as i have gathered, the teaching positions go to native enfgish speaking, however, you could probably take a verbal test and if no accent is detected, you might get accepted. teachers are required to speak good english, as any problem w/accents tends to discourage/confuse students. certificates are required at legit institutions.

Nilofer, you certainly have come to the right place. Or, in this case, the right man. PM me your e-mail addy and let's talk.

Also, check out http://costaricaclassroom.blogspot.com (post-Christmas 2006) for stories about a Norwegian teaching English in Costa Rica (yours truly).

That was a lot of posts in a short amount of time, geez.

Thanks for the replies. As daunting as the prospects look, I am quite determined to find a way Smile.
I am assuming it makes no difference if the TESL course is an online one, yes?

btw, is it possible to survive on a 400USD buget per month? Inclusive of living arrangements. In Malaysia, it is possible to get by with that kind of mullah.

Checked out the blogspot http://costaricaclassroom.blogspot.com. Pretty cool.

Congratulations on the girlfriend Ole. Smile
