Hey Folks
Sorry for the non-teaching post...feel free to delete if it's way out of line! I usually post over on the Japan forum, but I'll be traveling to HK in a few weeks, and wanted to pick your brains about camping along the Tai Long Wan coast. I'm interested in camping on the beach east of Ham Tim...heard it's really nice, but I'm wondering on how to get in and out. I know you can bus and hike it...but some folks in my crew are non hikers, so we're like to know if it's possible to catch/charter a boat from points further out (like Victoria Harbour). Any and all info are welcome...available transportation options, costs, facilities, etc! Thanks in advance...oh, and any other cool ideas for a short trip to HK are welcome!

Possibly, but probably easier and cheaper from Sai Kung.
There aren't any scheduled ferries there I know of, but there are kaidos (water taxis) of various sizes.
There are ferries to Chek Keng, but it's a steep hike from there to Tai Long Wan.

Hey, thanks for the reply...a ferry from Sai Kung would be ok too, provided we can easily train/bus from central HK to Sai Kung. Is there fairly regular public transit? |

Plenty of buses to Sai Kung.
I think fastest, MTR (train) to Choi Hung, and then catch a bus.
Tourist offices will give you plenty of info. |

Slightly more off topic.....
I was invited on my colleges O Camp. Camping I thought, adventurous training! The former Paratrooper in me comes out. I spent two days buying camping related goodies.
I pondered perhaps I could teach a quick segment on fishing bu making an improvised fishing line. That would be nice for their BBQ.
Upon arrival at the site, there was a slight cultural shock for me. That was the air conditioned huts with on suite bathrooms.
I am curious if anyone in HK actually does camp, as in a tent. If someone can drop any info to my e-mail I would really appreciate it.

camping in Dai Long Wan is fairly straight forward.
A taxi from Central to Wong Shek Pier costs ~$250 (you can usually negotiate with them first). From Sai Kung itself, you can organise a sampan. I've never done it, but I've been told it's pretty expensive.
Otherwise:
Get to Choi Hung via MTR. Catch the minibus to Sai Kung. Take the 94 (iirc) to Sai Kung Country Park and Wong Shek Pier, take a sampan (or ferry if it's sailing) to Chek Keng Hau and from there it's a gentle 40 minute stroll over the hill along the Macle Hose trail to Ham Tin Village (where you can get breakfast/lunch/dinner + bottles of water & beer). I just camp on the beach myself.
The sampan should cost no more than $20, but they will try it on for more.
You can get off the bus earlier than Wong Shek and walk along the Macle Hose. It takes a couple of hours.
edit: by $20, I mean $20 each person. Around 10 ppl can fit into a sampan. If there's less than 4 of you, you will prob have to pay more to make it worth their while to take you across (or just find a few other ppl and all go together) |
