Anybody have any info on IBS Academy Beijing? There is also one in Seoul, as advertised. I can't find a website for it, or much information, but they say they've been there since 1994. hmmmmmm. . . .

They're also advertising fantastic salaries - - $25,000 to $40,000 a year. I should qualify with a degree in education, experience both here and in China, and certification in ESL; however, there's that nagging thought, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is . . . "

Sorry, that was $1000 - $3000 a month. Still very good.

A school that claims to be around since 1994 and with branches in Seoul and in Beijing, but no web site? Definitely fishy. Also, you may have to commute a bit according to their job ad:

Vacation: 2 weeks (paid vacation) + national holidays
Medical Insurance

I've heard of them, if it is the same outfit. The salaries are true as it is an international school.

However, here are some known issues.

This is a real school and if you do not have a "Public School Teaching License" you can forget it it. (needed for accreditation) PGCE B.ed or higher.

They demand experience within the IB curriculum - 3 years + (This means you have worked at another International School IB program)

You must be dual certified. = 1 or more Content Areas + ESOL
(Example: Sciences and ESOL/ Middle School and ESOL)

They have a waiting list in China and often hire via their own channels.

I think the admin staff are Australian/UK so they hire mostly from these countries and promote a British style education theme.

Most have a masters degree or above.

They do not hire locally unless on rare occasions.

Police Checks are needed, and they verify your degree.
(No online degree's or EFL certificates accepted)

+40 hour weeks like a normal school

I'm not saying it is impossible to get hired by them, but it is highly competitive unless you have inside connections.

You will need good luck with a strong track record to get into this school, the staff turnover rate is very, very low.

When a teacher is ready to leave they have an overseas hired replacement already to go to fill this void and seem to rotate teachers from the same districts/areas abroad.

Some confusion exist as I heard they have a separate pay scale for local hires (The guy hired from the UK (same qualifications as you) earns an expat salary including housing while you earn a typical Chinese one without housing included.) Not sure if true but it has been reported in the teaching circles in Beijing.

Oooops, I didn't see TW's posting before I replied. After looking at his information above I am not sure it is the same school. I applied to them years ago and do not remember the criteria outlined above. Seems to be a different one or something connected on an experimental basis?? Who knows?

Peking University Appendant Experimental School Beijing, China = This indicates something different to me. The school I know, has a website (at least in 2005 it did)

prestigious university = ?? A Chinglish ad stating, "No online degree's accepted? Which is a requirement of the real IBS."

Several years of experience = Should be within the IB system, this is what disqualified me. I did not teach in this system for 3 years. I wonder why not specific now like before.

So, I'm not so sure we are talking about the same school I was thinking about or just another take-off.

Investigate more with caution.

Yes, not being able to find a website put several question marks in my mind. I am qualified except for teaching within an !B curriculum. Oh well, I'll just wait and see if anything comes of my inquiry. Thanks, you guys, for the info.

Do a search on this website for various reasons. First, I had a similar discussion with a poster who longer posts here - cj750 about this school. There have been various discussions around here about that school and as my memory serves me, none of them were particularly positive. The school is currently being managed by a cut-throat businessman from Singapore whose main focus is simply the bottom-line. The school is out in the boonies of Beijing in a university complex of some kind. Additionally, I do not believe it to be the school to which our kind poster SnoopBot refers. If I remember my discussion with cj750 correctly, the housing is shared housing, meaning, you have your own bedroom but the kitchen, living room, etc., etc., are all communal.

If you have time and are looking for a job at a later point in time, I would pass on this one, regardless of the money, and look at other schools in Beijing.

HFG

A few schools seem to be exactly what HFG has described in the ChangPing area (just outside Beijing as he mentioned) This one could be one of these. Years ago some deal with Singapore mafia types built a large amount of International type schools in the area of ChangPing. I am not sure if they are all connected to the same mafia type investors, but if these are the ones the OP was talking about. Well I would stay away.

They seem to change names often too for their recruitment process.
The shared housing is true and I've heard about a "fine system" being in place. You park your bicycle in the wrong spot = 200 RMB fine!.

This place was operated like a gestapo during the 2005-2006 period during a massive admin changeover. I wonder if they changed their name?
