Hey guys-
I did a bit of searching, but came back with not so much. Does anyone have current feedback about either UNIVA (or their language school Cele) or Proulex in Guadalajara? I've interviewed with both, and they seem pretty reputable, but I figured I would check. And, so we're all clear, they're offering me the rights that I am entitiled to. Aw yeah! Thanks for any help. |

I'm not sure about UNIVA, but Proulex is, well Proulex really! And I don't mean that in a good or a bad way. I knew a few teachers who worked there and although they were fairly content, they said that they just felt like another number, a clog in the machine as it were. If it's your first job in Mexico then you could certainly do worse and it's a good base to start from. |

Hi there, did you end up working for UNIVA? They are hunting for English teachers at the moment, with large classes apparently up to 28 students. They seem OK with reasonable benefits, but anything I should be aware of before applying?
Thanks for any help,

Hi there. I actually ended up moving to my boyfriend's hometown and starting my own school. I was close to working for UNIVA, but in the end they wanted me to be traveling across the city to give classes at businesses, while I was excited to be working on their campus, which was a 10-minute bike ride from my then-apartment. |

I worked at the UNIVA prepa and I strongly feel students could get a better education playing Command and Conquer and drinking Squirt all day. I was asked to complete a day-by-day plan for the entire semester, and when I was finished I was told that actually I'd been given the wrong resources, and would have to do it again with a different textbook. I was publicly berated in front of the students for things that the Mexican teachers did at times I was not even on campus. It was Blame the Foreigner all day, every day. The school had vague discipline policies with no follow-through, ever. Half the time you went to the office it was locked because ALL the administrators had left for the day at 11:00 am. Every time a student walks through the door, you can practically hear the ka-ching of the UNIVA cash registers. They will do ANYTHING to make a profit.
Yes, it's a job. And if you're someone who really doesn't care that much about their students, and who can brush off being treated like poop, it might be a decent paycheque by Guadalajara standards. Just be prepared! |
