Cool
Rents:

A cheap Room with a fan : 500.000 - 800.000 pm
A cheap House in a flood prone slum: 3-5 Million per year
A studio Apartment in Central Jakarta : 1.5- 2.5 Million per month
(not including Electricity etc)
An average House in a reasonable : 15- 25 million per year
area in central Jakarta (unfurnished)

Guest Houses and Hotels:
Jakarta:

A cheap room, with a fan and : 50.000 - 80.000 pn
outside Bathroom:

A basic room with a bathroom : 75000 to 250.000 pn
and AC

Outside Jakarta (Add 50% for Christmas and Idul Fitri vacations:
High Season- Travel costs are always higher
during high season: add 50% to transport costs)

A cheap room, with a fan and : 50.000 - 80.000 pn
outside Bathroom:

A basic room with a bathroom : 75000 to 250.000 pn
and AC

Clothes:

(Expat Club etc)

Taxis

New metered Taxis : Across the City 35.000 plus
Old Metered Taxis : Across the City 25.000 plus

Please note, no matter what area in Indonesia you live in. Supermarket prices are the same, Branded Cafes and restaurants like MacDonalds charge the same prices. Rents can be lower, along with local food but Electronics, clothes are higher than in Jakarta itself.

Standard prices, all over Indonesia:

Carrefour and other supermarkets
MacDonalds and other food franchises
Internet connections : 6000 ph or 200.000/450.000 pm
National Clothing stores
Taxis
Air flights and train tickets

- Most Expatriates admit that living outside Jakarta can be cheaper, but only really 25% cheaper in real terms, if you really go local:

eg: Rent a house in a slum
Eat in street stalls
Avoid Supermarkets, Malls, cinemas and Clubs
Travel outside High season
Buy Clothes from Markets

Think before you take that contract......Negotiate and connect to someone working in the area, outside the Company who want to hire you.

So 20% of a pretty basic 10million teacher's salary would be spent on rent living near the centre of a capital city?

Well going by that it seems that compared to Europe or America TEFLing in Jakarta is a pretty sweet gig.
