I'm coming to Kyoto to look for a job teaching English. I have experience, a teaching certificate, and a work visa, so I hope that in spite of everything going on with NOVA, I'll be able to find something. I plan to get a temporary place in a guesthouse for a month or two while job-hunting.
The cheapest accomodation I found was a place called Green Peace guesthouse, and it's in northern Kyoto. Does anyone know of it, and will it be terribly inconvenient to be located way up north? I read Kyoto is very bicycle friendly, but is it really feasible to get around solely by bike?
Maybe it would be better to pay more for a place that is more central? Anyone have any recommendations on a place under 50,000 yen per month with no deposits and key money?
I'd appreciate any advice. |

I stayed in a guest house in "northern" Kyoto, it was near a park called "funa oka koen" and bordered on a big Buddhist temple grounds. Christian Japanese family ran it. Finally got a rustic, but cheap place from the Quaker college in Kyoto, who had excess housing and of course there was no key money or other BS. This was some years ago, so don't know if either exist anymore.
Good luck and enjoy Kyoto, used to be a great place to be. |

I only spent a weekend in Kyoto a few years back but yes, it is VERY bicycle friendly! I would strongly recommend getting a bike once you settle there. The city itself is very compact and doesn't have many hills at all. |

Does Kyoto have any pub / live house areas like Rappongi or Shimokitazawa? |

kiyamachi for pubs.
livehouses scattered around the place.
bizarrely, the pubs and live houses mentioned in lonely planet are all good ones (this is not usually the case with lonely planet).
kyoto's a college town, so the live scene is pretty good. |
