Im working on my thesis for my MA in TEFL and have created a survey. The survey is about games and it should take about 5 minutes and it has 10 questions. I realise that time is precious, but Id really appreciate it if you could take five minutes of your time and complete the survey.
Thanks a lot

I can't answer all of the questions in the survey, even with the options boxes you have provided.

1. My employer has no control or concept about what/how I teach, so I can't answer yes or no about whether he encourages the use of games.

2. Playing "games" is pretty vague, so I would call it activities other than regular book work, but I have so many types that there is no one answer to my "main material", not as to how I group the students.

3. Question #8 needs better definition.

4. Question #9 (frequency of playing games) depends on my courses.

5. Question #10 could be answered "all of the above" and more.

6. Some teachers don't have a primary employer, so #4 is moot for them.

Sorry.

Do you not have to take some research methods courses as part of your MA? I am trying to answer the questions but the wording of the questions is very poor. Even in my undergraduate work, if I had written a survey with questions like these the results would have been considered useless.

"It depends," "all of the above," or "none of the above" could be appropriate answers for many of the questions, and the question about students' ages has some strange divisions. The 16-20 bracket, for example, would include both high school and university.

Pre-piloting the survey could help work out some of the kinks.

How do you group students while playing a game?

What are you looking for here? Obviously, as someone who actually considers her practice I group students depending on a variety of factors, including what skills they are practicing, their personalities, the format of the game we are playing, the learning outcome, class size, etc. If, over the course of a month, my students play games in pairs twice, in large groups twice, and as a class three times, do you seriously want me to choose "as a class" because we happened to use that grouping one time more?

Quote:
How do you feel about using games?

Within the context of the quiz, this question is rather odd. Since there is no option in the next question for never playing games, isn't it safe to assume that everyone answering will think that games are at least somewhat useful?

Quote:
What's the main reason you use games in the classroom?

It's weird that we can select all of the above, but not some of the above. Also, I would say the difference between "for review" and "to solidify the language the students have just learned" is one of perception.

Quote:
In your opinion, what are the negative aspects of using games?

How is "students follow the game's instructions" negative?

I think you should seek some guidance from one of your professors before attempting to create any further surveys.

For the grouping you pick all that apply.
As for being useful, some people may not think that they're useful.
For the third, review, like for a test.
Following instructions, if for example, it's a board game and they have to make a sentence and they just move and don't say anything, that would be negative.

Hope that clears things up.
