Hey, all. I've been keeping an eye on these posts for a few months now, and I've seen things that seem to answer most of the questions I have about moving to Santiago this coming January. So please bear with me. I know I'm covering old ground for many of you when I ask for the most up-to-date answers to the same questions. Namely:

- It seems that coming in January means it will be harder to find work. Is this true of private lessons only, or will the institutes and academies also not be actively hiring during this time? (I'll mention here that my wife and I are from the USA, and have University degrees, TEFL certification, and over a year's experience teaching in Korea).

- We are writers, and are looking for only about 20 hrs. of work per week. Is part-time work like this possible, and what might it pay? 500 USD a month? 700? 1000?

- A decent apartment in a good neighborhood. Possible for $350 - $400? (also, what might you consider the more desireable neighborhoods?)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

....the institutes will be hiring in Jan. Feb, early March are vacation so you might not have a FT schedule. but, if you're in Santiago there will be a lot of business classes. have you checked the pollution levels in Santiago?? they're not great. you might want to check for your long-term health.

there are other places to work PT in Chile. if i were you, id go out to Valparaiso, there are 2 or 3 institutes there....you can always go to Santiago for the day.

PT, 20 hrs, you'll make about $500-600...with 5 privates a week X $20 / hr, you'll make another $400 / mo

It depends what you're looking for in an apartment. If you're looking for a decent 2 bedroom place in a good location, I'd say $200,000-$300,000 CLP. If your only looking for 1 bedroom for you and your wife to share with someone else, I'd say $120,000-$160,000CLP.
Personally, I would recommend looking in Providencia or Nunoa. There are also some good places downtown, but it really depends what's important to you...

I was wondering what the 2 or 3 institutes were in Valparaiso?

Thank you so much JohninMaine!! I am moving to Santiago in December, but I would definitely consider applying for positions outside of Santiago if that could work out better.
