Does anyone have any experience with getting married to a Spanish girl. I met my gf in college as a foreign exchange student and have been together off an on for over 9 years. I have lived in Madrid before but just for the 3 month tourist VISA 3 months.
She has an insane job, she just finished her grad degree in Clinical Research and got picked up by the CRO she has been trying to get into for the past 4 years. This being the reason she doesn't want to come back to the states.
She after her last trip over here 2 months ago, she asked me to come back to Spain and was very serious about getting married. I don't know anything about it and she has no friends who have done it either.
Any input would be appreciated. I'm set to come back over on the 14th of November and start school at ttMadrid on the 19th.
Any thoughts kidds?
Thanks,
Paul |

Hi Paul,
I'm married to a Spanish guy (from Madrid). If you're asking about the logistics of getting married to someone from Spain, here was our situation: We got married in the States (in San Francisco). We filed all our paperwork so he'd be legit in the US and then had to do the same so that I would be in Spain.
If you get married in Spain, you'll probably have to fill out the normal marriage certificate & family book stuff (your gf should be able to explain all this to you). Then, you'll need to apply for a residence card so that you're able to work legally in the country, qualify for medical care, come and go from the country without hassle, etc. You'll also want to check in with US consulate in Madrid, too, to register your marriage. If you have questions about this, you should call the US Consulate in Madrid or phone the INS (which is now part of the Dept of Homeland Security ) here in the US. They can tell you what you'll need to do if you and your gf get married so that she has no problems in the future entering/staying in the US (if you choose to return).
Take care,
JR |
