Just browsing the ads, and they all start in April. So if its 15-16 weeks does that mean they finish in mid-July?
When do they start up again? Would it be October 1st through to January 15th?
What are the dates generally? |

semesters are usually 15 weeks long. There are 2 semesters per year. The second semester at my uni started Oct. 1.
The academic year at my uni finishes in February, so like my old HS, March was a free month for classes, but there was also plenty to do to prepare for the next April. |

So how does that work out?
The academic year finishes in February but starts in October 1st? Isn't that an extra month past mid-January (which is what I think the 15 weeks would end). Or is there a long break in there somewhere in the middle? |

G-man,
Confusing post - Clean it up and break it down for us.
You can do better than that!
i.e.: Oct. - Feb. Semester 1
When are you in session for each semester (i.e., between which months)? and in which months are you on paid leave for winter and summer? |

Here's a sample:
First Semester
April 1st - July 13th (Classes)
July 20th - August 3rd (Exams)
Summer Holidays
Second Semester
September 24th - January 16 (Classes) (+Christmas/NY break)
January 21 st - February 1st (Exams)
February 2nd - 15th - Administrative Duties
This isn't exact! I may be off by a couple of days here and there as I don't have the calendar with me. This is how it works at the place I'm at. It's a little different every place you go, but it falls somewhere in the months I listed above. I'm just passing it on to give you a bit of an idea of the semester set-up. Some people have more administrative days; it's part of the duties.
Good luck with the job search.

Can't speak for others, but my place is very similar to wabisabi's.
First semester April to early August. Last week is for exams.
Summer break runs until early October.
Second semester officially from October to March, but most classes are finished in mid-February. Any time from then to April is class-free, but there are always things to do. Winter break is late December to late January.
Got it now?

Perhaps my question was not clear. You have a load of question threads -- Japanese vacations, nationality of teachers, cheapest ways off Japan, other countries people have taught in, etc. I don't see how all of those could be relevant to getting a university job here, and I don't see why you have to clutter the board with so many individual questions when they could just as easily be put in one post. Shrug. |
