At the moment I work umowa o dzialo, which means I pay 19% tax on 50% of my earnings, and don't have to give ZUS a penny in terms of healthcare and pension and the like.

If I were to register myself as self-employed, or as my own company, what's the tax situation? Does the increase in hourly rate (from bypassing the school) justify the payment to ZUS? I'd love to hear from those who've gone down that route whether they ended up financially better off (esp. under Poland's cumbersome tax system.)

Just curious, as I'm still trying to sort out my situation. I've had a lot of trouble at the city office trying to start my own business. For all purposes I'm Maltese here in Poland, as I entered on my Maltese (EU) passport. However, I'm renting a place here in Wroclaw, and apparently I need to get my rental agreement changed so it says I'm allowed to conduct a business on the premises. Then I'll pay tax depending on the size of the place! It seems stupid to me.

Furthermore, I'm told you have to 'unregister' your business if you leave the country, otherwise you pay more tax or something? Again, sounds ridiculous, and I'll probably end up working on an umowa zlecenia contract where I pay ZUS.

anospi,

yes, the building you are working in must be zoned for conducting business. not all of them are.

also, you need Zameldowanie in that flat, which most landlords are not willing to grant their tenents.
