I recently bought a new Softbank phone that was supposed to be bilingual. I bought it from a private shop and the salesgirl gave me information on how to use it in English. I was in a rush and the shop was busy, so I figured I'd look it over when I got home. Plus she said "It's really easy to use".
After fooling around with it, I still couldn't get it to switch to English. So I went back to the shop a week later. The girl doesn't work there anymore and turns out this phone isn't bilingual at all. The second model is, but not the first one. I figured she made an honest mistake, but the mangaer was like "You have to talk to Softbank about this". Of course Softbank said it is the shop's fault, which I agree with.
Now I'm stuck with a phone that has NO English capabilities whatsoever, and my phone is my life! I mean I use it for email, train schedules, everything. The shop flat out refused to swap the phone and Softbank isn't helping much either. To get "rid" of this phone, I have to pay the rest of my contract which is 2 years or about 60,000 yen. Which is plain crazy---for a phone that was supposed to be bilingual. So what can or should I do? I am so tired of going back to the shop and calling Softbank to argue on this issue...Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

My phone completely in Korean, and at first, this was a huge problem for me (and it is a really, really quirky phone). However, you'll get used to it before you know it, even if you can't read Japanese. I think that in order to change the language, the phone's firmware has to be updated. My shop told me the same thing about bilingualism, but when I took it home I found I couldn't switch. I think it was something they could do in the store, but is difficult to do on your own unless you have some way to upgrade the firmware yourself (like with a PC link cable). Just hang in there -- you'll get it in no time flat. |

On Softbank's website, they have the instruction manuals for many of their phones in English. Even if the phone isn't bilingual. Ironically, there might be an English version of the manual, so at least you can try to figure the phone out. If you bought a new or current softbank phone, it should be bilingual. I always assumed it was a stock feature. Its possible the softbank staff you were talking too, may not understand what is going on. I would suggest calling softbanks english support line to ask more questions and plead your case. |
