In January or February, I'll be heading down to Chile and I'm beginning to apply to some schools in Valparaiso but was informed that they are expecting applicants to work all evenings and some Saturdays. Is this common?! ! I keep hearing that it's not really wise to commit to a job before arrival but dont want to get there too late- also dont want to get sucked into a contract where I'm working ridiculous hours. Any input will be GREATLY appreciated. Also. . . anyone know of someone in need of a roommate come Jan in Valparaiso?

yes, it is pretty common in L.America to work evenings.

Saturdays, not usually. because they are gearing up for all the soccer games, etc. but, it might be kids on Sat AM 8-12 or so.

either way, you'll have free time M-F 12noon-5pm. you'll learn how to take naps.

Students usually want classes early mornings, during their lunch breaks or in the evenings after work. I don't know too many people that work on saturdays but it's not unheard of. I've heard that it's pretty hard to find work in Valpo, so doing saturdays may be a sacrifice you have to make if you want to live there.

Ai, is it true that almost all the jobs are in Santiago? I was initially interested in going there but have heard that the pollution is REALLY bad ( bad enough that it's detered others from living there) and I would anticipate it's a lot more expensive to live there,than Valpo. Do you know if this is accurate? Where are you teaching? do you think it's pretty feasible to just show up in Jan and land some jobs with very minimal experience (but with a TEFL and a BA)? I'm thinking I might go ahead with a placement agency, despite their high fees. THanks again for the input. Any more will be greatly appreciated!

you might try www.teachingchile.com ....you start mid-february and make about $350 / mo. i believe the application is due, Nov 30 2007.

otherwise, just head on down. i'm sure you'll make more than $350.00 / mo.
