Hi, I just have a few questions about New Years in Tokyo and the trains.
Basically my family are coming to Japan at Xmas and we want to go to Tokyo for New Year.
My family are gonna buy a rail pass, so they'll be able to use the non reserved carriages of the bullet trains, and I'll just buy a non reserved ticket when I get to the station with them. We want to leave from Tokyo on New Years day, will the trains be really crowded, will we be able to get on? They need to be back in Osaka on the first, I'm just a bit concerned about not having train reservations.

no problem. The U-turn starts on January 3rd.
Japanese people tend to be with their families on the first so trains aren't crowded.
New Year's lasts three days in Japan.
