Does someone know the legalities of paying the taxes as a autonomous? I understand that as an autonomous one must pay some 220-240 euros each month (depending). But what if we only make for instance, 500 or less a certain month (ex. December/July)??? Someone told me that if we make less than a certain amount for the year (around 10,000 I think) that we did not have to pay these taxes(???) Does anyone know the laws? |

The 220-240 you were told about is your Social Security contribution which is obligatory. On top of that you pay tax every 3 months in the first 20 days of April, July, October and January. You'll need a 130 form from Hacienda to do this. Your Social Security contribution is deducted from what you pay along with other costs you incur. You can make a NEGATIVE declaration if you earn very little.
Once a year in May/June you make your annual declaration and will need to get someone to do it for you.
Hope this helps. |

sheikh radlinrol thank you for your info. Must these SS payments be paid even when we have less than minimum salary and barely enough money to pay rent (for example)???? Also, what if one is covered through another EU country for SS- and has access to health care because of that -and pays those charges in their home country? Must one pay both countries SS's ? What is the sorce of your information? Is it only what you have heard? |

I'm an ''autonomo'' myself and this is what I do. I also have a friend who works in the local office of Hacienda (tax dept.)
It's certainly my understanding that to work legally in Spain you must make Social Security payments, either paid by your employer or, in the case of autonomos, you pay it yourself. This gives you the right to see a doctor and get money if you become ill.
You also have to make the three-monthly tax declarations even if you earn and declare nothing. I'm pretty sure you are exempt from the annual declaration if your income falls below a certain level.
You can, of course, work illegally. Many do. If you had an accident, you would be treated in hospital. You wouldn't be able to give proper receipts to your clients and some demand them.
As for paying Social Security in more than one country- I don't know.
