When I was in Japan, I noticed that there seemed to be a pretty equal ratio of men and women 'gaijin' teachers in Japan. Is this the case across other countries, like Korea or Taiwan? Or, have some of you not seen this to be the case in parts of Japan? I was in the Osaka area...

In the Kanto area, anywhere I worked the male teachers usually outnumbered female by up to 4 to 1. It's my impression that a lot more guys come to Japan than women.

I would say there's a pretty equal number of men and woman coming over. The ratio changes when you start taking into account length of stay. You will find quite a disproportionate number of men (as compared to women) who stay long-term. They hook-up, get married, have kids, mortgages, ... all the things that make one more prone to settle in one place.

It's disheartening and sad to watch so many great women leave after only one or two years. I've made great friends, and have had to say good-bye to what I'm sure would amount to 95 percent of them during my time here. I have one friend who has been here the duration. My partner, on the other hand, has a whole group of ex-pat men who regularly get together for food and fun, and have been doing so for the past 15 years. Oh, the luxury!

I read somewhere that the ratio of male to female teachers in Japan is about 3 to 2. That's an overall average, so regions will differ.

I hadn't thought about the length of stay. I knew a few women who had been in Japan a few years, but their boyfriends had come to teach in Japan also. I don't remember any single women staying longer than a year.
