Here`s my situation: I`m an American citizen who`s currently living in Mexico. I plan on heading back to the States for a bit, before going to my next destination. I`m thinking of coming to Taiwan to teach English. From reading through old posts, it seems like there are two things I need to do before I come:

1) get my degree notarized
2) get my visitor`s visa

So now for my questions:

1) How much time should I allow for processing these (assuming no glitches)? (in case it matters, I`ll be in the DC area when I return to the States)

2) Do I have to have these done in the States or can I have them done elsewhere (the Philippines for example)?

3) Is there anything else I need to do before I arrive?

Your visitor's visa can be obtained from any country that has a TECO office. I am sure the Philippines has a TECO...and I think it should only take a day or two, but I am not positive about that.

The time to get documents notarized depends largely on what type of notarization you need. While I was in Taiwan, I never had to do this, so I am assuming it's a new rule and I am not familiar with what ind of notarization you will need.

If you just need a local notary to do it, they can do it in a minute while you wait. But if it needs to go further (county / state / federal) you will need a good few weeks to get it all processed. The good news is that you are in DC, so you may be able to do it all in person (assuming your degree was from DC). If so, you could probably clear it all in a week. The timely part comes in mailing things out and waiting for them to be sent back.

Thanks for the reply. After doing some more reading, sound like the degree notarization may be only for post-secondary jobs.

One more question: Is the visitor`s visa for 60 days or 90? I seem to have seen conflicting information on this.

If you have a US passport it will be for 60 days.
