I know I know, most people seem to want in the UAE. Well, I want out!
I've been here nearly nine years and I'm up for renewal for a fourth contract. I'm earning good money, have a great villa, my female HCT students are lovely and I live near the mountains, desert, booze shop and a have a cat that never needs feeding, not by me anyway.
There are strong rumours of the dirham unpegging itself from the dollar and the government has just announce a 70% pay increase for 'Federal Employees'. That may or may not cover HCT teachers but I wouldn't bet on it.
My post is, where would you recommend I try teaching in Japan.
 I don't need to save
Only live reasonably and have modest accommodation.
I have an MA in TEFL
15 years teaching, the last 9 focusing on PET and IELTS.
Ive taught Business and Engineering English
Id prefer to be out in the sticks
I paint as a hobby and dont need bars and clubs
Ill be 48 when I leave
 Im single
I have all my own teeth though they are not all the originals
Id prefer to teach student who are reasonably motivated and who dont see an education as a birthright and college as a place to meet friends, chat on line and be baby-sitted all day.
I have waded through most of the posts here but some fresh positive views would be most welcome.

well you may not want to work for a university, then.
A decent language school may suit you. |

I thought to apply to the schools that are testing centers fot Cambridge University exams. I'm an examiner for PET and have lots of experience teaching the test practice materials. |

yes, but it is doubtful that you could live in a rural area, unless you would have a long daily commute.
Those jobs would probably be in bigger cities.
Are you thinking about the British Council?
Not many people here take the Cambridge exams, or the IELTS.. Most people take the TOEIC or the TOEFL.

I think you should aim for a good national university. It will give you all you require. (mine does)
I am not sure if your age will go against you, but I know people with less quals and experience than you who have managed it.
Even in the bigger cities except Tokyo, I presume, you can still find many places that are outside the actual city and it would be easy enough to live the 20 minute train commute further into the sticks rather than back into the city centre. |

This seems to be a bit contradictory. |

I'm not sure Japan is the best choice for you then, to be honest. PET is almost unheard of. Apart from the British Council, your best bet for IELTS might be a Senmongakko that prepares students to study abroad. If the students are actually planning to go abroad rather than just killing time and avoiding gettting a job (a distinct possibility) motivation for these students can also be higher than for Japanese university students. These schools tend to be right in the centre of the city, though, whereas some univeristies have more suburban/ rural campuses that might suit you better. Still not sure any of them are a perfect match for you- have you considered Thailand?? |
