Can anyone reccomend a good pansiyon in or close to central Izmir.

Hate to refer to guide books, as they can be so inaccurate.

Thanks,

'Dude.

I haven't stayed there myself but have friends who regularly stop off en route to Ayvalik and speak highly of "Guzel Izmir". It's just off Dokuz Eylul Meydani, where all the bus offices are (Basmane/Fuar area), is basic but thoroughly respectable. Last heard - 30ytl for single en suite.

It is listed in Lonely Planet - that's usually a trustworthy guidebook.

Forget pansiyons, for the difference between them and a half decent hotel you may as well pay a litle bit more and have a decent level of safety and comfort. Basmane, by the way, is the local red light district you may end up with a lot more than you bargained for. Personally I wouldn't doss down in any of those places, but each to his own. Notice FGT has not ACTUALLY stayed there herself.

As Otterman Ollie pointed out, Basmane IS the local red light district, that's why I described it as "respectable" to show that it is the exception to the rule.
He's also correct in reiterating that I haven't stayed there myself; that's because I rent a flat in Izmir and have no need of hotels/pansiyons!
Two single, female friends have stayed there and have had no problems.
If I needed a cheap place to stay while passing through Izmir I would use it.

I don't mind paying a little more.

I am definirtely looking for clean and respectable.

If there are any other suggestions for pansiyons and hotels, I am all ears.

Thanks FGT.
