| i am considering doing some PT work at ILM, bakirkoy. I have experience teaching TOEFL and IELTS and would like to hear any comments regarding this school and what kind of money I can expect for these kinds of classes? I presume the pay for PT work would be at an hourly rate? |

| As far as I know, they are after cheap labour! (I worked for them for a couple of weeks.) They will only hire teachers locally and won't pay for any extras such as a housing allowance, bonus etc. I don't think this reply will be deleted, will you? Because they don't advertise on international job forums, either! |

For part time work, the hourly wages start at about 16YTL - which is widely considered bottom of the barrel. That is at English Time. Other schools start at 18YTL and up (still not awesome, but better).
This is recent information gathered within the past few months. If you have IELTS you may be able to get a position at EF starting around 20-25 YTL - but not completely sure about that.
Bakırky is rife with language schools. Definitely go for a walk through the area and check out the schools in person.
Standing on the train bridge right near the Bakirkoy square looking towards Sirkeci you can see Dilko, and Gokdil. ET is across from the cemetary heading in the opposite direction of the pedestrian street Ebuzziya. Keep heading up that road and you'll run into BilgeAdam and Wall Street. (BilgeAdam is at the Town Centre mall and Wall street is directly across the road).
On the cemetary road, not too far from the Square (meydan) is a Callan method school called American Academy. Walk the opposite direction that the cars go.
ILM is not far down Ebuzziya. Walking From the train station you'll turn right at a potato stand. ILM's sign is slightly obscured by a sign from Dialogue English, which I think is also a Callan school though I am not certain.
Walk down Ebuzziya towards the ferries and you'll see Discover. Right before Discover there is a road that turns off to the right, it goes behind the Carousel. That's where English First is.
I have come across a few other schools in the area but their names escape me for now. Best to make a day of it, go talk to the teachers and managers, get a feel for the place, make notes (or you'll forget which school was offering what).
There is more of this information on page 2 of the Master Index Turkey, painstakingly put together by a former poster to this forum. Good luck. |
