Two English teachers deported - The Jakarta Post
TANGERANG (JP): The Tangerang Immigration agency deported two foreign nationals Friday for violating their visas.
Arriving on tourist visas, the two men, identified as 38-year-old Australian Stephen Lowson and 41-year-old Nicholas Stanley Charles Eager of Britain, were detained Thursday night while teaching English in Pamulang.
Chief of Tangerang Immigration Agency Pondang Tambunan told The Jakarta Post that the two would be sent to their countries origin on Friday evening.
"We have tickets for them; Nicholas is scheduled to leave Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 8:20 p.m., and Steven will fly to Australia at 8:45," he said Friday, adding that the deportation process would be tightly monitored by his officers.
Lowson and Eager reportedly entered the country on Oct. 6.
Tambunan said as an industrial area, Tangerang is a haven for foreigners working without proper documents |

"...were detained Thursday night while teaching English in Pamulang"
So let's see if I got this right. In the middle of a class, Immigrasi bursts in and drags the teachers off, and the school owner did what? Nothing? They wont even back you up when your in the school itself and grease the wheels a little. You'd think for no other reason than to not cause a massive scandal at the school.
Owner to DoS: Oops, best go to the bule vending machine and order some more.
DoS to owner: You're not going to help these guys who we bought in to work for us and were just following our instructions?
Owner: Too expensive lah, go get more. |

Yup. Excellent example of the local attitude. Best be prepared to face this kind of injustice. Who knows who will be next ? BTW was the school owner reprimanded for this 'misdemeanour' ?

Well, for my two cents worth, I know that every time I changed schools, (see below) had a holiday and started at a new school, I was on a tourist visa.
I did the usual 'trial period' of about two months, then I was shipped off to Singapore for a working visa and later all the visits to immigration, police station etc etc.
Only once did my employers (TBI) ask that I get a Business Visa before returning to Indonesia.
As implied above, the wrong grease or not enough of it was used.
As a matter of interest to those planning to climb the "EF ladder", if you change schools, you go back to "GO" and start again, salary-wise. your experience counts for nothing. |

Just in case my last reply was ambiguous, I hasten to add that it was EF who employed me on tourist visas until my 'trial period' was completed.
TBI asked that I get a Business visa before I left Oz, which seems a bit better than maquerading as a tourist. |

It was NOT TBI. TBI doesn't have any branch in Tangerang. |

Really? News to me. I work at TBI Bogor and all the teachers are here today.
Plus Bogor isn't in Tangerang...
So just to confirm before the rumour spreads: TBI Bogor is not the school in that article. |
