Hi, I am wondering if anybody has info about cycling or cycle touring in Costa Rica. I may be teaching there and I would like to do some off season training. I am an avid amateur competitive cyclist. I am talking about skinny tires rather than mountain bikes. How bad is the traffic? Where are the best spots? I have done lots of cycling in Cuba but I expect there is a lot more traffic on the highways in C.R. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I know that there are some pretty good skinny tire riders here but not in San Jose. I am sure for safety reasons you need to go outside the city. I see riders going to and from Escazu in the early mornings on Sat. You might check with one of the local bike shops.. |

Thanks jprimm. I am guessing that Escazu is close to San Jose. You are right in thinking that I would not be cycling in the city. I was thinking a stretch of highway which was not too busy. Were the riders from CR?

I live in Cartago, and fairly often see fat- and skinny-tire cyclists along the main highway between Curridabat and Cartago. Sometimes even races take place. There seem to be a fair number of people dedicated to this sport here, despite Costa Rican highways' reputation for being pot-holed. |

Yes the riders were and are from San Jose and ride the highway towards Escazu and Santa Ana...on the shoulder. It appears to be fairly safe as I used to ride alot in the U.S. (Boulder, Co.) and it looks very much the same and with hills... |

I've the same impression - lots of bikers around here. Sunday morning when traffic is low (church) is a very popular time for bikers. |

I went mountain biking in an area outside of San Jose called Carona..it was absolutely beautiful...and not crowed.. Went 24 K and as I had not been on a bike in 2 years...it kicked my but...also saw maybe 25 skinny tires on the highway.... |
