Thanks for the answers.

I think I must have some kind of visual dyslexia, because others recognize the characters more easily.

In my case, I get confused and mix up characters which resemble each other like the 'ha' and 'ho' - 'ma' and 'mo' and quite a few others.

Out of the 46 characters, there are about 10 that I still get confused with.

Problem number 2: I can recognize many of the characters on sight, but if I had to actually write them out, I would not be able to do so.

How about you folks? Do you make a distinction between recognition and actually being able to write them out, or do you think they should go hand in hand?

In summation, I'm much more of an auditory learner rather than visual learner. I am in Korea now, and learning Korean, and have the same problem with hangul. I can read them all, but much slower than the other foreigners in my class. However, my fluency skills are higher than the vast majority of my peers.

It depends on your learning style, I think. Some people need to write everything out, partly in order to associate a motor function with a kanji/hiragana character.

I'm at the opposite end of the scale. I know about 1200 kanji and several thousand compound words...and I can't write a single one of them. Good visual memory, I guess. And aside from learning how to write my name in Katakana, I've never bothered learning how to write hiragana or katakana either. I probably should, at some point (for example, if I start taking a Japanese class) but to be honest my inability to write Japanese has NEVER been a hindrance in everyday life here.
