actually, the two are not connected. 85% of the airport tax you pay goes towards offsetting the cost of fuel stores the airport is required to keep on hand at all times, the remaining 15% goes towards facitity upkeep and monitoring. the employees that offer their famous "just smile and nod to everything you ask" service are actually paid through the fees airlines pay to dock their planes at the airport. more planes=more people= more revenue and therefore more staff required. i know this because my neighbor is some self professed "big wheel" at the airport. he gave me a card of his once and told me that if a showed it to the counter people i wouldn't have to pay the tax.... so far i am 0 for 3 on attempts, although one lady was nice enough to laugh before regecting my request to wave the fee. i believe the conversation went something like this.....

girl: ..and 100,000 for the tax please.
beef: oh, i was told if i showed you this card that the fee would be waved
girl studies card...even the back that has no writing on it(?)... then gives it back.
girl: that is not you
beef: i know its not me but the man who....
girl: what man?
beef: the man on the card told me that....
girl: is he with you?
beef: no, he is my friend and he said that if...
girl: do you know his seat number?
beef: no, he.....
girl: let me look for you, this will just take a second, sir.
beef: you know, how about i just give this 100,000 to you and then you can stop pretending to type on your computer....

Just curious. Does anyone in Indonesia actually believe most of the dosh collected from passengers' departure tax actually goes to the government coffers ... and stays there ?? Surely nothing's changed, has it ??

There was that little scandal last year of Adam Air check-in staff pocketing millions in tax money every week at CGK, and I doubt they are the only ones to have done it.

Beefer - that happens so often! Some self-professed brass hat with an inflated sense of his own importance deluding himself that his name carries some 'backing' in the world outside his office.

WHY? do they do this?

Also, when you take something to be repaired or exchanged, there will be at least 4 people taking it in turns to look at whatever it is - normally looking at the bits that don't need fixing.

If flying Adam Air use that extra 50ribu to buy some life insurance that will benefit your bereaved relatives, and forget the pretty siren on the counter.

That is one flying circus you wouldn't get me on board so long as I had at least one arm free.
